UNEP Recognises Empower efforts in ‘Global District Energy in Cities Initiative’

Following the UAE’s signing of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change during a high-level signing ceremony at United Nations Head Quarters in New York on 22nd April, Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling company, received an official recognition from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for its efforts in supporting the ‘Global District Energy in Cities Initiative’ (DES Initiative). The recognition praised the efforts of H.E Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower in strengthening DES Initiative in achieving its objectives.

This comes following the technical and consultation support being provided by Empower to many cities in the world, mainly building momentum for the district cooling market in India.

HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower said: “we would like to thank United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for selecting Empower as a partner of the 'District Energy in Cities initiative' last year and the adoption of Paris Agreement in December 2015, Empower has concludedits efforts with a global recognition that reaffirms the broad effort led by the UAE government and its corporations in this domain. This coincides with the UAE’s signing of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change during a high-level signing ceremony in New York recently.”

“The UAE has established its position alongside the world’s leading countries to address climate change. The UAE leadership has launched an integrated vision to help sectors specialised in energy sector to follow environmental practices and promote sustainable technologies. Empower did not only follow these practices but went the extra mile in promoting the global green practices to help cities around the world build environmentally friendly district cooling systems,” added Bin Shafar.

The DES Initiative aims to scale up sustainable energy in cities through increased investment in modern district energy systems. Empower contributes significantly within the initiative by providing expertise and know-how for assessments of cities, facilitating study tours for pilot country delegations and sponsoring outreach and training events.

“Empower’s involvement from the outset of DES Initiative coincides with the world’s most important climate agreement. We assure that the environmental approach, led by the UAE government in this area, has helped us to excel globally and created the ideal environment to develop technologies in this industry,” concluded Bin Shafar.

Empower currently operates more than 1 million 100 thousands RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments, such as Jumeirah Group, Business Bay, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Ibn Battuta Mall, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai World Trade Centre Residences and Dubai Design District, among others.
